When the first white settlers came into this area in 1819,
they were greeted by an African American fur trader named Pete Smith who helped them to survive
the first year. He and other early Black arrivals were important in the
settlement of what would become Hamilton County, but have disappeared from the
history books. This program will look at these now-hidden figures and try
to bring them back into their proper significance. Presented by David Heighway, Hamilton County Historian.
