Composer C. Bryan Rulon returns to the Hamilton East Public Library in Fishers to talk about what? Minimalism. Minimalism is one of the most important trends of the late 20th Century and a major contribution by American composers. We will examine its sources from Indian Ragas to African Drumming to pop and rock music as well as emerging technologies in the 60's and 70's. We will further explore some modes of listening that enhance appreciation and enjoyment of this music such as “two dimensional listening”, “staring with your ears” and Pauline Olivero's “deep listening”. We will discover the wonders of phase-shifting, metric displacement, joyous repetition and psycho-acoustic phenomena (that's hearing things you don't normally notice). Gertrude Stein said there is no repetition, only insistence.
